We make WonderCast, one of the options below. Treat what we say about it as disclosure rather than a review. Where an option is the better pick for a particular family, we say so, and for several families it will not be ours.
What Wonderbly is, and who it's best for

Wonderbly sells personalized printed books "by bestselling authors and illustrators, never AI." The personalization we could confirm is your child's name and a written dedication. You order from a web shop and the book is delivered by post. Most books start from $34.99. There is no app and no audio version.
That makes it a natural gift: something to wrap, something a grandparent can hand over, something that sits on a shelf for years. If that is what you want, Wonderbly is a sensible place to start, and the fact that every book is made by human authors and illustrators will matter to a lot of families.
People tend to look for alternatives for one of four reasons: a lower price, a book that looks like their child rather than just using the name, something to read on a phone or tablet tonight, or a steady supply of new stories rather than a single book.

Little Stories: best for a name-personalized library made without AI
What it is: an app with a library of human-written, human-illustrated books that use your child's name. (App Store)
- Free: four books.
- Price: $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, or single books from $0.99.
- Voice: you can record yourself reading, so your child can hear you when you are away.
- Where: iPhone, iPad and Android. Made for ages 0–5. Rated 4.6 from 47,000 ratings.
- Best pick if: you like Wonderbly's human-made approach but want many books on a device, including Android, at a much lower cost per book.
WunderKind: best for your child's photo in classic fairy tales
What it is: an app of classic and original tales, with AI artwork made from your child's photo. (App Store)
- Price: free to download with in-app purchases. What is free and what Premium costs were not stated on the listing.
- Personalization: your child's likeness from a photo; Premium adds their name.
- Reading: Premium adds word-by-word highlighting.
- Photos: the listing says photos are "promptly deleted" and "never stored or used to train AI models."
- Where: iPhone and iPad. Rated 4.6 from 746 ratings.
- Best pick if: you want your child to appear in well-known fairy tales, on an Apple device.
WonderCast: best for new stories starring your child, plus reading practice
What it is: an app that makes a new storybook, audiobook, song or short movie starring your child from one typed sentence. (That's us.)
- Personalization: a character made from a photo or a written description, which stays the same on every page and in every future book. The photo is deleted once the character is made and is never used to train AI.
- Reading: every word lights up as it's narrated, and a hard word is one tap from being sounded out.
- Voice: a grown-up's own voice can narrate on the Creator and Studio plans. Recording a child's voice is switched off.
- Safety: a Safety Agent screens prompts, and stories have no scary or shaming beats. Details are on our safety page.
- Free: six complete stories in the free library with no account. The free plan makes and keeps 10 storybooks and 10 audiobooks.
- Price: Wondy $3.99 a month for the library; Starter $9.99, Creator $19.99 and Studio $29.99 a month, each with a plain monthly count of books, audiobooks and songs.
- Where: iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and the web. No Android app, though it works in an Android browser. For ages about 3–8.
- Not for you if: you want a printed book. WonderCast does not print books. For a physical gift, Wonderbly or Hooray Heroes is the better choice.

How to choose
Decide first whether you want a book to hold or stories to read on a screen, then decide how much your child should look like themselves. Those two choices narrow the list quickly.
Print or digital. A printed book is a keepsake and a gift. It does not need a charged device, and it does not change. Wonderbly and Hooray Heroes are the printed options here. An app gives you more stories for less money, often with narration, and can be ready tonight. Little Stories, WunderKind and WonderCast are apps.
How your child appears. There are three levels:
- Name only, sometimes with a dedication: Wonderbly and Little Stories.
- Chosen features, where you pick hair, skin tone and so on from a set: Hooray Heroes.
- A likeness from a photo: WunderKind and WonderCast. WonderCast also lets you describe your child in words if you would rather not upload a photo.
If you are searching for a "personalized story book with photo," the photo-based options are the apps. None of the printed books we checked used a photo. Before uploading, read what each company says happens to the photo afterward.
Price per story. A printed book is a single story at a gift price: from $34.99 at Wonderbly, $19.99 to $29.99 at Hooray Heroes. Little Stories sells single books from $0.99, or a subscription. WonderCast's paid plans give a set number of new books, audiobooks and songs each month, and the free plan makes and keeps 10 storybooks and 10 audiobooks. If your child wants a new story every week, an app costs far less per story. If you want one beautiful book, print is worth the price.
Gift timing and shipping. Printed books need printing and posting, and the delivery times were not stated on the pages we checked, so look at the checkout page before a birthday or holiday deadline. Apps can be ready the same day, which helps when the deadline is tomorrow.
