There is no single best bedtime story app, because these apps do different jobs. Some write a new story about your child. Some are libraries of books other people wrote. One is a printed book that arrives in the post. Ranking them one to ten would mean pretending they compete on the same thing.
Instead, each app gets a verdict: what it is genuinely best for. We checked every app against its own website and App Store listing on 26 October 2026, and we link to them so you can check again, since prices and features change.

WonderCast — best for your child as the hero, with reading practice built in
What it is: an app that makes a new storybook, audiobook, song or short movie starring your child, plus a free library to start with. (features)
- Free: six complete stories at our story library, with no account and no card. The free plan also lets you make and keep ten storybooks and ten audiobooks.
- Price: Wondy $3.99 a month for the whole library. Starter $9.99, Creator $19.99, Studio $29.99 a month, each with a plain monthly count of books, audiobooks and songs, never credits. (pricing)
- Your child in it: from a photo, turned into an illustrated character that stays the same on every page and in every future book.
- Reading: every word lights up as it's narrated, and a hard word is one tap from being sounded out.
- Voice: only a grown-up can record. A parent or grandparent can have stories read in their own voice on Creator and Studio. Recording a child's voice is switched off.
- Photos: the photo is deleted once the illustrated character is made; we keep the character, not the photo. (safety)
- Ages: about three to eight, App Store rating 4+.
- Not for you if: you need Android (there's no Android app yet, though the website works in an Android browser) or a printed book.
WunderKind — best for your child's photo in classic fairy tales
What it is: a library of classic and original tales, with AI artwork made from your child's photo. (App Store)
- Free: free to download with in-app purchases. The listing doesn't say what's free.
- Personalisation: "your child can appear in every story" from their photo; Premium adds their name.
- Reading: word-by-word highlighting during narration, on Premium.
- Photos: the listing says photos are "promptly deleted" and "never stored or used to train AI models."
- Where: iPhone and iPad. Rated 4.6 from 746 ratings.
Oscar Stories — best low-cost AI story generator
What it is: an AI app that writes a new story, with your child as the star and a choice of narrator voices. (oscarstories.com)
- Free: "Generate your first stories for free."
- Price: $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year on the App Store, plus coin packs.
- Personalisation: you choose characters, names, appearance and traits. Photo upload isn't mentioned.
- Where: iPhone, iPad and Android. Made for ages 6–8; rated 4.5 from 56 ratings.
Bedtimestory.ai — best for unlimited AI stories in a browser
What it is: a website where you type an idea, add your child as the hero, and get an illustrated story. (bedtimestory.ai)
- Price: $4.99, $9.99 or $19.99 a month, all with unlimited stories of five illustrations each; the plans differ in how many "pop-up books" (with narration) you get. (pricing)
- Free: sign-up needs no card; a free plan isn't listed.
- Where: web only; we found no app.
Little Stories — best name-personalised library, made without AI
What it is: a library of human-written, human-illustrated books that use your child's name. (App Store)
- Free: four books, any time.
- Price: $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, or single books from $0.99.
- Voice: you can record yourself reading so your child hears you when you're away.
- Where: iPhone, iPad and Android. Made for ages 0–5; rated 4.6 from 47,000 ratings.
Readmio — best for parents who'd rather read aloud themselves
What it is: you read, and the app listens and plays sound effects and music on cue. It also has audiobooks. (readmio.com)
- Free: a small "Explorer" set of stories.
- Price: subscriptions from $5.99 a month on the App Store.
- Voice: your reading can be saved as your own audiobook. It says speech recognition runs entirely on your device and no recordings are stored.
- Where: iPhone, iPad, Android and web. Rated 4.9 from 2,400 ratings.
Moshi — best audio-only sleep routine
What it is: sleep stories, meditations, sounds and music, with some guest stories read by Goldie Hawn and Patrick Stewart. (moshikids.com)
- Price: $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year, after a seven-day free trial.
- Your child in it: no; it recommends content for your child's age and interests.
- Where: iPhone, iPad and Android. Rated 4.7 from 70,000 ratings.
Storyberries — best completely free library
What it is: a free website of illustrated stories and audiobooks: "No apps, no login, no subscription." (storyberries.com)

Wonderbly — best printed keepsake
What it is: personalised printed books "by bestselling authors and illustrators, never AI," with your child's name and a dedication. (wonderbly.com)
- Price: most books from $34.99.
- Where: a web shop; the book arrives in the post. No app or audio.
A five-minute test you can run on any of them
- Time it. How long until a complete story is actually playing? If the answer is "make an account first," note it.
- Same child? Make one story and compare page one with page eight. Children notice when the face changes.
- Search the safety page for "delete." Specific answers about photos and voice are a good sign; vague reassurance isn't.
- Turn narration on and watch the words. Does the current word light up? That's what turns story time into reading time.
- Say the monthly allowance out loud in one sentence. If you need a calculator, that was a choice someone made.
Whichever app passes all five for your family is the best one for you. It may well not be ours.

Is there a free bedtime story app? Yes. Storyberries is entirely free on the web. WonderCast keeps six complete stories free with no account, and Little Stories has four free books.
Which bedtime story apps put my child in the story? WonderCast and WunderKind use your child's photo. Oscar Stories, Bedtimestory.ai and Little Stories personalise by name or chosen traits. Wonderbly prints your child's name in a physical book.
Are AI bedtime story apps safe? Ask three things: is the content made for young children, can strangers see anything your child makes, and what happens to photos and voice recordings. Our own answers are on the safety page.
Do any of these apps clone a child's voice? None of the apps we checked advertise cloning a child's voice. Little Stories and Readmio let a parent record themselves reading. WonderCast lets a grown-up's voice narrate stories and has recording a child's voice switched off.
