Kai loved playing in his backyard. The grass felt soft under his bare feet. "Let's play knights!" he called to his friends. Emery and Julius ran over. They were ready for an adventure. The sun felt warm on their faces.

Kai looked around the yard. He saw sticks and old blankets. He saw big, green leaves on the trees. Suddenly, Kai had a super idea! "Let's build a fort!" he shouted. "A super-duper fort!"

Emery clapped her hands. "Yes!" she said. "A fort would be fun!" Julius thought for a moment. He tapped his chin. "It must have a tall tower," Julius said. He pointed to a pile of long sticks.

Kai felt a little flutter in his tummy. A tower? Emery wanted to play inside. Julius wanted a tower. Kai wanted a fort. Would their ideas fit together? Kai looked at his friends, a little bit worried.

Kai looked at his friends, a little bit worried. Julius suddenly jumped up. "A fort needs a tower!" he said. His eyes sparkled like sunshine. He wanted it to be super tall. Julius loved building high things. He looked around the yard.

He saw long sticks and branches. "I will get sticks!" Julius said. He ran to a big bush. He pulled out long, skinny branches. They made a *snap* sound. Julius piled them up. He imagined a tall, tall tower. Emery watched him. She felt a little confused.

Kai watched Julius too. The branches looked wobbly. Could a tower be that tall? It might fall down. The wind could blow it over. Kai heard Julius humming a happy song. He was very focused on his tower plan.

Julius stacked three sticks. Then four more. The tower grew higher. He looked up at the sky. "My tower will touch the clouds!" he said. Kai and Emery looked at each other. This tower was very big.

Emery looked at the tall sticks. Julius's tower was very high. "My fort needs a cozy room," Emery said. She found soft blankets. They felt fuzzy. Emery found big pillows too. They were squishy.

Emery put the soft blankets down. She arranged the big pillows. "It will be snug in here," she told Kai. Kai watched her. It looked nice and warm. But then Kai thought about Julius's tower.

How would a cozy room fit with a tall tower? Kai heard a little hum. It was Julius, still working. Kai felt a little worry tickle his tummy. "Will it all fit?" Kai asked Emery.

Emery patted a fluffy pillow. She looked at Kai with a big smile. "It will be the best fort," she said. Emery kept arranging the pillows. She wanted it to be very, very cozy inside.

Kai watched Julius and Emery. Julius was still building his tall tower. Emery was finding soft blankets. Kai felt a little flutter inside. He wanted his own idea for the fort.

Kai looked around the yard. He saw a big piece of flat cardboard. It was perfect! Kai picked it up. It smelled like sunshine and old paper.

Kai wanted a secret door. A door only friends could find. He took out a red crayon. He drew a swirly star. This was his secret symbol. No one else knew.

Kai looked at his friends. They were so busy. Julius hummed a loud song. Emery giggled with a cushion. Kai felt a little sad. Would his secret door fit their fort?

Kai watched his friends. Julius’s tall tower looked wobbly. It leaned this way and that. Emery’s soft blankets and big cushions slid down. They tumbled out! Kai’s secret door cardboard flopped over. Oh no!

They tried to push the fort all together. Creak! Groan! Wobble! The whole fort shook. Julius’s tower did not look strong. It looked like it might fall down. Kai felt a little sad.

Emery’s cozy cushions were a mess. Kai’s cardboard door was on the ground. This was not a super-duper fort. It looked messy. It looked wobbly. Kai sighed a big sigh.

Julius looked at the leaning tower. Emery looked at the fallen cushions. Kai looked at his door. Their fort was not working. It looked like a big, wobbly pile.

Mum walked into the backyard. She saw the fort. It was a big, wobbly pile. Julius’s tower leaned. Emery’s cushions were on the grass. Kai’s cardboard door looked lost. Mum’s smile was kind. She looked at the messy fort.

“Oh my,” Mum said softly. The wind rustled the leaves in the trees. “This fort looks like it needs some help.” Kai, Emery, and Julius looked at her. They felt a little sad. Their super-duper fort was not super-duper at all.

Mum knelt down. “What if Julius’s tower was shorter?” she asked. “Then it might be stronger.” Julius looked at his tall tower. Emery looked at her soft cushions. Kai thought about his secret door.

“And what if the cozy room was inside the strong part?” Mum asked gently. Kai, Emery, and Julius looked at each other. They started to think. Maybe their ideas could fit after all.

Mum’s words made Kai’s brain buzz. “What if the tower was shorter and stronger?” Julius looked at his tall sticks. He nodded slowly. “And the cozy room inside the sturdy part?” Emery asked. Kai watched them start to work. They were trying again. This time, together.

Julius took some sticks away. He made his tower shorter. It did not wobble so much. “This is strong now!” Julius said. He sounded happy. Emery picked up soft blankets. She put them inside the fort. It was like a little room. A soft, cozy room. The blankets felt warm and fuzzy.

Kai found his big piece of cardboard. He looked for a good spot. “Here!” said Emery. “Right by my cozy room.” Kai taped his cardboard door. It had a secret symbol. It looked just right. The fort smelled like fresh grass and soft blankets.

The fort was not wobbly now. It was strong. It was cozy. It had a secret door. “Wow!” said Kai. “Super-duper!” said Emery. “We did it!” cheered Julius. They all cheered together. The fort looked amazing. It was taking shape at last.

The fort was finished! It was not quite like Julius’s tall tower. It was not just Emery’s cozy room. It was not only Kai’s secret door. It was all of their ideas, made into one. It was strong and cozy and had a secret door. Kai looked at their amazing fort.

“Wow!” said Emery. “It looks super-duper!” Julius nodded. “It is the best fort ever.” Kai felt a big happy feeling in his tummy. They all worked together. They made it strong. They made it cozy. They made it special. It smelled like fresh grass and sunshine.

Kai, Emery, and Julius climbed inside. They snuggled down on the soft cushions. The fort felt safe and warm. Kai peeked through a small window. He saw the backyard outside. It was their own special place now.

They all smiled at each other. They knew their super-duper fort was the best. It was the best because they built it together. Just like playing in the backyard, their fort was fun for everyone.
