Dad tucked Julius into bed. "Goodnight!" said Julius, pulling the covers up tight. But wait! Dad looked a little worried. "I’m a bit scared of the dark, Julius," Dad whispered. "Will you help me be brave tonight?"
Julius giggled. "Of course! We can be brave together! First, should we check for sleepy monsters under the bed, or make sure the closet door is shut tight?"
Julius bravely got out of bed and tiptoed to the side. Dad followed close behind. Together, they peeked underneath. "Look!" said Julius. "It’s just fluffy dust bunnies and a lost sock! No monsters here!"
Dad smiled. "You’re right! It’s safe. Now, what’s next on our brave mission? Should we listen for funny night sounds or turn off the big light?"
Julius puffed out his chest. "I’ll check the closet!" Dad held the door open just a crack. Julius peeked inside. "Just my toys and some clothes! Nothing scary at all!" Dad gave a big sigh of relief.
"Great job, brave Julius!" said Dad. "Now, should we play shadow puppets on the wall, or get cozy under the blankets?"
Dad and Julius sat quietly, listening. They heard the wind rustling leaves outside, the house creaking softly, and Julius’s own gentle breathing. "It all sounds so peaceful," Dad said. "Just the sleepy sounds of nighttime."
Dad felt much better. "Thank you, Julius. You’ve made me feel so safe. Now I think I can drift off to sleep. Will you sing me a lullaby?"
Julius reached for the light switch. "Ready?" he asked. Dad nodded. Click! The room was dark, but not scary. Julius pointed to the faint shapes. "That’s your dresser, and that’s the window!"
Dad smiled warmly. "You’re right, Julius. It’s just my room, even in the dark. I feel so much better now. Thank you for helping me!"
Julius held up his hands, making a funny bunny shadow on the wall with the dim nightlight. Dad laughed. Then, Julius made a wiggly worm! Dad tried making a big, round shadow that looked like the moon.
"This is fun!" said Dad. "Playing shadow puppets makes the dark feel like a game. You’re a great helper, Julius! I think I’m ready to sleep now."
Dad and Julius snuggled down together under the warm, soft blankets. It felt safe and cozy. Dad closed his eyes, listening to Julius’s quiet breathing next to him. "This is the best," Dad whispered.
Julius smiled. "I’m glad I could help you feel safe, Dad. Now you can have sweet dreams."
Dad felt so brave, all thanks to Julius! He gave Julius a big, warm hug. "You are the bravest helper a dad could ask for," Dad said, feeling sleepy and safe. Soon, Dad was fast asleep, dreaming happy dreams.
Julius sang a soft, gentle lullaby. Dad listened, feeling the sleepiness wash over him. "That was so kind of you, Julius," Dad whispered. "I feel so loved and safe. Thank you."
Julius told a silly story about a squirrel who wore roller skates. Dad couldn't help but chuckle. "That’s hilarious!" Dad said, giggling himself tired. "You always make things fun, Julius. Goodnight!"
